Fax: +44 20 7848 2545Modern Greek studies go back to 1919, the date of the foundation of the Koray Chair. The Department is the largest department of Byzantine and Modern Greek studies in Great Britain. During the 1970s the program expanded, with the initiation of undergraduate studies in Modern Greek language and literature in 1974. A postgraduate course of studies on late antiquity and Byzantine studies began in 1984 and a course on Modern Greek studies in 1990.
Approximately 40 students attend the program, half of whom attend the postgraduate courses.
The Department is in close co-operation with the Centre for Hellenic Studies of the College. Scholars from Greece and abroad visit the College regularly for lectures and seminars. The Centre is active in the field of publications (six publications since 1993). The Centre is in close co-operation with the Dialogos journal. The journal has been published since 1994 and covers a wide range of Greek studies.

The Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies is one of the few departments in Great Britain that offer Modern Greek as a Single or Joints Honours programme. Many different subjects are offered (e.g., the literature of the Cretan Renaissance, contemporary poetry and prose). For students who wish to combine the study of Modern Greek with other subjects a wide choice is offered: archaeology, ancient history, other foreign languages, computing.
Knowledge of Modern Greek is not a prerequisite for enrolment in the undergraduate courses. Students over 21 years of age may enrol in the Department. Students from Greece and Cyprus are especially welcome.
Postgraduate courses are also available. Students have the opportunity to work for their PhD thesis.
Publications: the annual journal Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies; translations of contemporary Greek authors.

The Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages is divided into seven departments offering courses in European languages, literature and linguistics. Modern Greek studies last four years (students attend the third-year courses abroad). During the first two years students are required to study two foreign languages. Modern Greek studies can be combined with the study of another foreign language, Latin or Ancient Greek.
A library of about 4,000 volumes is available. Audio-visual material is available to students as well as the possibility of viewing Greek television channels.

Modern Greek is one of the languages offered through the MSc in Translation Studies. Other languages are: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
The students taking this programme with Greek will be Greek nationals who have studied English to a high level and will translate between Greek and English. The programme does not offer any Greek language tuition and is not available to students who are other than fluent in Greek. -

The University of Oxford was the first in Great Britain to establish a lectorate, later a chair for Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature (1908).
Three study cycles are offered by the Sub-faculty of Byzantine and Modern Greek: a) a full B.A. four-year program (specialization in Medieval and Modern Greek language, literature and history), b) two postgraduate courses: a one-year M.St. in European Literature and a two-year M.Phil. in European Literature (specialization in medieval and Modern Greek literature); M.St. and M.Phil. in Linguistics (specialization in medieval and/or Modern Greek language), c) two research projects: M.Litt. and D.Phil. (PhD) (specialization in medieval or Modern Greek literature or language). The study of Greek can be combined with the study of another language and literature at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Students may choose the topics for the research projects from the fields of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies.
