- accusative [αιτιατική]

The case, i.e. the form of the article, noun, adjective, pronoun or participle, when these parts of speech syntactically occupy positions of objects, or are used after prepositions. When the noun is used in this way and is accompanied by an article and/or an adjective, both the article and the adjective are also used in the accusative. E.g. Peter painted the beautiful circle. He painted the angel.

The accusative preceded by a preposition. In such cases it is used as a time or place adverb, e.g. He came from Athens.

The accusative, usually preceded by an article plus a preposition and used as an adverb of time. E.g. I saw him on Tuesday. Similarly: in May, in the spring, in 1995, in the twentieth century, etc.
