Program for the Teaching of Greek as a Second Language to Working Immigrants

In brief: The educational program “Teaching of Greek as a Second Language to Working Immigrants” trains working adult immigrants in the Greek language and introduces them to Greek culture and the realities of modern Greece. The program, which comes under the EPEAEK II, is designed and supervised by the General Secretariat of Continuous Learning and executed by the Institute for Continuing and Adult Education (I.D.EK.E.).

The program was first implemented in November 2004, and is eventually planned to encompass 56 departments in Attica and 154 in the remaining prefectures where Vocational Training Centres (KEE) operate.

Target group: The beneficiaries of this program are working immigrants, regardless of ethnic origin, and the spouses of Greek citizens. The goal of the program is the ‘seamless’ integration of these individuals into the economic, social, and political life of Greece.

Programs of Study

The program is structured in four levels of teaching, consisting of 100 contact hours each. A certification is awarded at the completion of each level. Each course of study, at any of the four levels, lasts three or four months. Students completing the second, third or fourth level may participate in the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek examinations at levels Α, Β, or C, respectively.
