Center for the Teaching of Greek Language & Culture

In brief: The teaching of Greek as a second/foreign language began at the University of Ioannina in the academic year 1991-92 with the institution of open programs for the study of the Greek language. The “Center for the Teaching of Greek Language and Culture” (KE.D.E.G.PO.) was founded by decision of the Senate of the University of Ioannina in 1996.

The Center has formed collaborations with the Greek Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, National Economy, the National Foundation for the Reception and Resettlement of Repatriated Greeks, the General Secretariat for Hellenes Abroad, the European Union and other official institutions and organizations in Greece and abroad. All these institutions and organizations fund learning programmes for foreigners and Greeks abroad. In addition, courses of special interest are supported by the University of Ioannina.

During the twelve years of its operation the Center has trained more than 3.500 students from all over the world and especially from the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe.

The Center also cooperates with the Center of Vocational Training of the University of Ioannina and organizes vocational training seminars for jobs relevant to the economy and production, and also programmes for the avoidance of social isolation. In these seminars the repatriated Greeks or foreign people also learn Greek with an emphasis on relevant Greek technical terms.

The aim of the Center for the Study of Greek Language and Culture is to support the spread of Greek language and culture outside Greece, as well as the teaching of the Modern Greek language to immigrants and to foreign students at the University of Ioannina.

The Center also organizes special seminars and conferences on subjects relating to the teaching of Greek as a second language, and offers special training to educators.

One further purpose of the Centre is the production of manuals and other teaching materials (CD-ROMs, cassettes, film) to be used to support students and teachers among Greek-speaking minorities abroad.
