Institutions and Programs available for the teaching of Modern Greek to adults
Democritus University of Thrace
In brief: Democritus University of Thrace organizes programs for the study of Greek as a second/foreign language in two departments: (a) the Department of Greek Literature and (b) the Department of Languages, Literature and Culture of the Black Sea Countries.
(A) Department of Greek Literature
Target group:
- 1. Students from Turkey, the Balkan states, Germany, France and the Czech Republic studying at the University’s Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program.
- 2. Students participating in Erasmus and Socrates programs at University departments in Komotini.
Programs of Study
- For target group (1): The programs last 2-3 terms, with 2 three-hour sessions per week, depending on the needs of the students.
- For target group (2): The programs last 1-2 terms.
(B) Department of Languages, Literature and Culture of the Black Sea Countries
In brief: The program for the teaching of Modern Greek for foreigners does not consist a permanent offer of the Department. Since 2003 5 terms have been offered, which were funded by the University of Thrace. Each term included 60 to 80 hours of teaching.
Target group: The program is mainly intended for Muslims, new refugees and immigrants.
Programs of Study
In every term lessons are offered for three proficiency levels (beginning, intermediate and advanced) according to the results of a preliminary test. Many of the participants have gone through the Examination for the Certificate of the Attainment in Greek, which is organized by the Centre for the Greek Language and takes place in collaboration with the Department of the University.
