The teaching of the Modern Greek language was introduced by the Department of Slavic Philology in 1993 and, since 1995, has been part of the program of the Department of Classical Philology, the University’s oldest department. Courses last 4 semesters (64 hours per semester) and are offered to the students of the program "Lithuanian philology and Modern Greek", as well as to the students of the Department of Classics as a foreign language (elective course). Modern Greek has also been offered as an elective course since 2002 to all university students.
A new postgraduate course in classical philology (Latin and Greek studies) has operated since 2002. Students who choose to study Byzantium and contemporary Greek history are expected to speak Modern Greek.
A small library on Modern Greek is available. Most of the books have been donated by the Kostas and Eleni Ourani Foundation. The founding of a centre for Modern Greek studies is planned to house the library and all the teaching materials.
The Department has been participating in the SOCRATES program through which students attend their specialty courses and Modern Greek at the School of Modern Greek of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
    Faculty: Κ. Svarevičiûté.
