The Seminar was founded in 1966. Modern Greek studies were introduced in 1996 as a separate section. The department is an active one, with many students and an organized library. It is the only university in Germany to offer a complete study program in Modern Greek (B.A., M.A., PhD). Students can combine Modern Greek with studies in foreign languages and literatures or in the history of Southeastern Europe. Moreover, a new (2010) postgraduate program has commenced; the program focuses on aspects of Modern Greek history, literary criticism, and cultural history. Students have to attend seven obligatory study cycles some of which are offered with the co-operation of the universities of Munich and Hamburg.
The Seminar cooperates with the universities of Athens, Amsterdam, Granada, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Crete, Cyprus and Tbilissi.
