Professor Fotios Malleros tried to initiate Modern Greek teaching in 1967 but the Centre for Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies commenced its operation in 1998. The program “Diploma en Estudios Griegos” began in 1977. Subjects offered (to all students of the Philosophy Department): Ancient Greek language and literature, Byzantine history, and Modern Greek language and literature.
Significant publications include the translations and articles published in the Byzantion-Nea Ellas journal or as individual publications. The articles concern Classics, Byzantine, and Modern Greek. Forty-three individual publications have been produced (1976-1999).
The Centre’s library, the only one of its kind in Latin America, was organized largely through donations (by the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, and other institutions). 8,000 volumes on Byzantine and Modern Greek issues are included, apart from those on classical topics.
The Centre cooperates with 70 Universities and Centres-Institutes for Greek Studies.
Faculty: Héctor García Cataldo, César García Álvarez, José Marín Riveros, Roberto Quiroz Pizarro, Roberto Soto Ayala, Sergio González Arrieta, Miguel Castillo Didier.
