The Department became autonomous in 1935. For the first 40 years of its operation Modern Greek-oriented courses could be chosen as elective courses. The well-known writer and scholar D. Hatzis held a position as assistant professor from 1963 to 1974. The autonomous Department of Modern Greek Studies (providing full courses and special degrees) was founded in 1975 and was the first to be founded in one of the former communist countries.
Students need to know Greek (elementary level) before they enter the Department. The Department accepts students every two years.
Subjects: Modern Greek, oral speech, history of modern Greece, literary textual analysis, Ancient Greek, exercises in translation-interpretation, history of Modern Greek literature. Duration of courses: four semesters. For their degree students have to practice in teaching, take up a written assignment and sit for the final exams. Two degrees are awarded: Hellenist-researcher, Hellenist-secondary education teacher.
A library of 6,000 volumes is available.
The Department published the Homonoia journal from 1979 to 1983.
